Animals That Don't Sleep Much: The Exceptional Creatures

When we think about animals sleeping, we often imagine them curled up in a cozy ball, snoozing the day away. But not all creatures need (or get) much sleep at all! Some animals have adapted to spend less time sleeping, and their unique lifestyles are a testament to their incredible resilience.

Goats and cows, for instance, only get 4 hours of sleep daily, with most of it occurring overnight. Sheep, on the other hand, manage with even less – under 4 hours per night – and they do so in groups, often huddled together for safety. Their internal organs are protected from being crushed by sleeping on their sides or standing upright.

Horses also get a good amount of rest, but it's not exactly the same as our traditional notion of sleep. They nap for short periods of 15 minutes at a time, and they always have one or two sentinels on watch while others are resting. This ensures that someone is always keeping an eye out for predators.

Giraffes, with their towering heights and vulnerable spots, have developed some remarkable strategies to get by with limited sleep. They spend most of the day eating (up to 18 hours a day!), and then take turns sleeping standing up or leaning on trees while others keep watch. In the wild, giraffes will only sleep after sundown, and even then, they'll only snooze for short periods.

Some marine mammals also defy traditional notions of sleep. Dolphins, for example, can swim while they're asleep – or appear to be asleep while actually remaining vigilant with one eye open. They can also sleep with half their brain at a time, allowing them to rest while still keeping an eye out for predators. Orcas and walruses are other marine mammals that can go without sleep for extended periods.

Finally, there's the alpine swift, which has been known to fly non-stop from Switzerland to West Africa for six months straight! It's unclear whether they ever truly sleep or simply rest while in flight.

So why do these animals need so little sleep? In general, larger creatures tend to require less sleep than smaller ones, and herbivores that graze throughout the day often don't need as much rest as carnivores that eat big meals. Whatever the reason, it's clear that some animals have evolved to thrive on less shut-eye – a testament to their remarkable adaptability and resilience.
